About the publication

An independent editorial publication, founded in 2023.

We cover well-considered objects for the home, kitchen, workspace, electronics, outdoors, and quiet life — slowly, carefully, and on our own terms.

Last updated: October 2025

Hearthline was founded in March 2023 by Imogen Hale, a trade journalist who had spent eleven years writing about domestic design for other people's publications. The idea was straightforward and a little stubborn: build a small editorial publication where reviewers are given time to actually live with the objects they cover, where bylines are accountable, and where the rhythm of publishing is set by the editorial team rather than the news cycle.

Why Hearthline exists

The open internet is awash with product coverage that was written within a week of the product arriving, by writers who returned it shortly after. We had two simple suspicions: first, that this kind of coverage is not very useful; second, that readers can tell. Hearthline is the publication we wanted to read — slow, accountable, edited, and willing to say that a product has aged badly even when that conclusion arrives a year after publication.

Our editorial mission

We aim to be useful to readers who are buying something they intend to keep. That single sentence shapes everything else. It rules out launch coverage, "best of" lists assembled in an afternoon, and the algorithm-chasing essay grind. It rules in long-term reviews, careful comparisons, conservative buying guides, and the willingness to return to a piece five years later and say what changed.

Independence policy

Hearthline does not accept paid placements, sponsored coverage, or "promoted" reviews of any kind. We do, occasionally, accept review samples on the explicit and non-negotiable conditions that: (1) there is no editorial influence over what we say, (2) there is no obligation to publish, (3) sampled products are disclosed within the review. We have declined coverage opportunities where the brand's pitch was tied to editorial outcome. The full policy lives on our editorial standards page.

We earn revenue through the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. Commissions from affiliate links do not influence what we recommend; they fund the publication's continued existence. The arrangement is set out in plain language on our affiliate disclosure page.

Review philosophy

A long-term review is a different document from a first-impressions review. It can say things that a launch-cycle review cannot: what stitched after a wet winter, what cracked in year two, whether the firmware still works, whether the brand's customer support survived a corporate sale. We test in real homes, kitchens, workshops, and the field. We do not use lab benches. We do not run instrumented test rigs. We use the products the way readers would, and we keep notes.

Full methodology is set out on our methodology page.

Reader-first principles

  • No urgency tactics. We do not display countdowns, fake stock levels, or limited-time framing. Buying decisions deserve calm.
  • No pricing claims. We do not state prices or sales in real time. Prices change; reviews stay published.
  • No AI-generated reviews. Every word on Hearthline is written by the named author. We use editing tools; we do not use generative tools to draft.
  • No undisclosed conflicts. Where a reviewer has a relationship to a brand, the piece carries a visible disclosure.
  • Quiet design. No newsletter modals, no exit-intent popups, no aggressive interstitials. The publication is here to be read.

How corrections are handled

Factual errors get corrected. The process is short: a reader (or any of our editors) identifies the error, the responsible writer is notified, and the change is made. Material corrections are logged in the update history at the foot of every piece, with the date and a plain description of what was changed. We do not silently rewrite published reviews.

Corrections can be sent to corrections@hearthline.com. Please include the URL and the specific sentence in question.

How updates are handled

Every published review carries a "last reviewed" date. When that date is more than twelve months old, the responsible desk editor revisits the piece, confirms the recommendation still holds, and either updates the review or schedules a fuller revisit. Material changes — a firmware regression, a withdrawn product, a brand ownership change that affects support — are surfaced in the update history. The update history is permanent.

What we cover

Seventeen editorial desks across five families: browse the full network. Each desk is led by a named editor with at least a decade in or around the category, and reviewers are listed openly on the editorial team page. Older pieces remain available in the archive.

What we don't do

  • We don't publish "best of" listicles assembled in an afternoon.
  • We don't run sponsored content, dressed up or otherwise.
  • We don't claim prices, sales, or availability in real time.
  • We don't generate reviews with AI. Every word here is written by the named author.
  • We don't recommend products we haven't used for a meaningful period.
  • We don't unpublish reviews. We update them, and we log the changes.

How to reach us

Reader questions, corrections, and suggestions all start in the same place. Write to the editors via our contact page, where the specific desks for editorial enquiries, corrections, press, and partnerships are listed.
